Artisan Spotlight: Meet Chucho, Our Rock & Roller of the Workshop

Posted by Della Wheeler on

If there’s one person who knows their way around Stray Dog Designs’ workshop, it’s Chucho—our resident spray-painting wizard, tinsmithing pro, and self-proclaimed rock and roller. Chucho has been with us for an incredible 27 years (yes, longer than Jane and Billy’s son, Pete, has been around!), and we’re celebrating him as the first feature in our new Artisan Spotlight series. Get to know the man behind the spray booth and hear a few of his fun stories from nearly three decades of painting Stray Dog creations.

A Little About Chucho’s Role

All of our metal items—from tin fixtures to iron frames—pass through Chucho’s capable hands for priming and base-color painting. He also paints the insides of lampshades and everything else that needs that perfect, even finish before our detailed hand-painted designs come to life. If you’ve ever admired the smooth, solid color of our metal products, you can thank Chucho’s steady hand for that.

Rapid-Fire Q&A with Chucho

1. How long have you worked at Stray Dog Designs?

I’m celebrating 27 years at the workshop this June! I might just be the longest-employed member of the team.

2. Where did you learn your craft?

Before joining Stray Dog, I worked in a workshop doing tinsmithing and painting cars. That’s where I picked up a lot of my painting know-how.

3. What’s your favorite item to paint?

I really love painting the white shades of the Mr. English Table Lamp. I think the solid white color looks so clean and sharp—and, to be honest, they’re pretty easy for me to paint, too!

4. When you’re not working, what’s your favorite thing to do?

I like picking up extra painting jobs on cars. After that, nothing beats hanging out with my family and enjoying a few beers.

5. What’s your most memorable moment in the workshop?

I wouldn’t call it memorable in a good way, but there was a time I left a few pieces out to dry on the roof. A sudden gust of wind came through, and next thing I knew, about five fixtures ended up in the neighbor’s patio—completely destroyed. Definitely an unforgettable (though unfortunate) learning experience!

A Toast to Chucho

From day one, Chucho has poured his energy, skill, and creativity into every piece he handles. Whether he’s priming a chandelier or lending his steady hand to a batch of tin fixtures, his dedication sets the tone for Stray Dog’s signature handcrafted style.

Thank you for 27 amazing years, Chucho—here’s to many more! Stay tuned for more artisan spotlights, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the people who make Stray Dog Designs truly one of a kind.

Meet the “Chucho” Chandelier

Chucho’s impact on Stray Dog runs so deep, we named one of our fixtures after him! The Chucho Chandelier—like its namesake—is all about creativity, strong craftsmanship, and a little bit of rock and roll flair. Every time we see its graceful curves and bold design, we’re reminded of the talent and dedication Chucho brings to our team every day.
