At Stray Dog, we’re endlessly inspired by designers who embrace color, pattern, and personality in every project—and Michelle Gage is one of our absolute favorites. Based in Philadelphia, Michelle brings a vibrant, intuitive approach to interior design, transforming spaces with daring combinations and thoughtful details. From vintage art finds to whimsical lighting (hello, Coralie pendants!), Michelle’s work is equal parts joyful and intentional. Today, we’re thrilled to share a behind-the-scenes look at her journey, process, and what’s next for her thriving design studio.

Journey & Background
Michelle’s path to interior design was built on a lifelong love of creativity. “I studied interior design in college and always knew I wanted to be a part of that world,” she shares. After graduation, Michelle worked as a buyer for Anthropologie, following her passion for creative work when the perfect design firm wasn’t in sight. Her career has been a slow, steady climb—proof that lasting success is built over time, not overnight.
Design Aesthetic
Michelle’s style is all about feeling. “My approach to design is very intuitive. I’m always collecting bits of inspiration—whether it’s from interiors, fashion, or travel—to inform my work,” she explains. For Michelle, it’s not about following strict rules but creating spaces that evoke joy and comfort.

Sources of Inspiration
Art, travel, and fashion are constant sources of inspiration. Michelle loves curating her growing art collection, whether through Instagram discoveries or vintage finds from local galleries and global markets. “I just came back from The Paris Flea Markets with a bunch of art for a client,” she says. Travel not only sparks new ideas but gives her time to recharge. “The tile in Portugal was truly one of a kind!”

Creative Process
While Michelle leads with intuition, her process is anything but loose. “We have a pretty rigid process to carry the vision through to completion,” she explains. It’s a collaborative approach that grows through client feedback to make sure the final result is one everyone loves.
Favorite Projects
One of Michelle’s standout projects is Book Hounds in St. Michaels, a unique and playful bookstore designed for both humans and dogs. “It’s a fun and funky space, and we’re so excited for our client’s journey!”

Color & Pattern
Michelle’s work is rooted in fearless use of color and pattern. “Each room usually starts with a fabric or wallpaper that sets the tone. From there, we pull complementary or contrasting colors to build the mood,” she says.

Favorite Design Trend
One timeless detail Michelle will always love? “Colored trim with wallpaper,” she says. As for trends that can go? Accent walls. “We’re over it now. They should’ve never been hip!”
Stray Dog Pieces
Michelle recently added our Coralie Pendants to her conference room. “They’re the perfect scale over our presentation table. So sweet and whimsical!”

Looking Ahead
Michelle’s excited about fresh ways to connect and showcase new work. “We have some exciting photoshoots coming up, and that always leads to big reveals. We can’t wait to share more on Instagram soon!”
Personal Touch
When Michelle isn’t designing, she’s dedicating her time to helping animals. “My world is pretty much design and dogs. I’m incredibly active with a local rescue organization here in Philly,” she shares. Her two passions even merge in her projects—stay tuned for an upcoming design that’s all about supporting furry friends.
