We are constantly inspired by our designers and retail stores! It brings us joy to see how they use our lighting and décor in interior design projects and their own store vignettes. One store that has caught our eye is Madre, a Dallas based childrens furnishings shop that also offers design services. You can stop by for a gift or to have a consultation on your nursery. Their colorful esthetic with tailored touches is oh so appealing. At Madre you can find Biscuitbedding, Little Bean Shop clothing and of course, Stray Dog Designs. We are inspired by this store and the three mothers who run it. Mia took the time to answer some interview questions for us, get ready to be inspired...
DO YOU HAVE A DOG?
We all have dogs but unfortunately they are not given as much love as they deserve with all the kids running around! I have a silver lab and 5 pound toy fox terrier - she is barely a dog!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ROOM IN THE HOUSE WHERE YOU GREW UP?
We all seem to have a fondness for our own rooms as children, so maybe that is why we love designing them for others so much!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ROOM IN YOUR SPACE NOW?
We just put up a beautiful coral Krane wallpaper in the design area of our shop, so currently we love to sit in there and admire it.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST?
I have always loved the work of Raoul Dufy with his illustrative scenes of horses and boats full of pastels. Hunt Slonem's bird paintings catch my eye as well, and I have purchased a couple pieces by Sunita Kumar. We try to always have unique and colorful art in the shop as it can really make a room. Caitlin McGauhley is an artist we have carried since opening and her watercolors are always bright and happy with fun subjects perfect for kids' rooms.
WHAT LED YOU TO THIS CAREER?
Growing up with a mother who loved design and was always taking us to beautiful places really made me appreciate details and how well designed spaces inspire and change your experience.
WHAT DECORATIVE ACCESSORY DO YOU LOVE TO WORK WITH?
We love using pieces with a fun natural element. Coral, tole flowers, turtle shells, animal art... I think that is why we love so many Stray Dog pieces with their inspiration from leaves, birds and branches.
WHAT ARE YOU READING RIGHT NOW?
I wish we all had time to read for pleasure! Maybe when the kids are grown!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
The best part about designing for nurseries is that it is such an exciting and happy time in people's lives. We get to create wonderful spaces to make memories for both parents and children. The rooms get to be cheerful and uplifting and are literally filled with life.
